I have been watching an ungodly amount of TOS lately, and I've gotten to the point where I've watched all the good ones and now am just sifting through and trying to find mildly lolzy parts of the later episodes where they had about two dollars to spend on a set and the costume budget was a placemat and a hell of a lot of tinfoil. It can get kind of boring, but it is seriously rewarding when you do find something good, like, oh, when you uncover the fiftieth time that Bones kind of creepily tries to get Spock to drink alcohol! Well, it has happened three times so far (and Bones has a 66% success rate, by the way), but I think it counts as a trend.

why? the answer probably involves roofies )

Also, I watched "Devil in the Dark" and I can totally see why it's Nimoy's favorite episode because it's pretty much the TOS version of "The Voyage Home": unsubtle environmental message featuring Spock mind melding and ~bonding~ with some lumpy, maternal, and yet misunderstood organism. I loved it like Spock loves the Horta. :DDDDD

All this "Sarah Palin resigning to save the children" shit is MAKING MY FUCKING WEEKEND. I forgot how amazingly surreal just listening to this woman speak is. It's like this one time I downloaded the wrong version of a telenovela and the dub was in Portuguese instead of Spanish, which I didn't figure out until about five confused minutes in. Sarah Palin is speaking her own dialect of crazy and, lo, it is good. From the text of the speech:

I do not want to disappoint anyone with my decision; all I can ask is that you trust me with this decision – but it’s no more “politics as usual”.

Was anyone else really upset that she did not call herself a maverick?

Some Alaskans don’t mind wasting public dollars and state time. I do. I cannot stand here as your Governor and allow millions upon millions of our dollars go to waste just so I can hold the title of Governor. And my children won’t allow it either.

I, just...you guys, does she realize that this excuse doesn't even deserve to be called one? Why couldn't she just say that she's quitting to spend more time with family or something? Sure it's flimsy, but it's at least plausible and, hey, it could play up the "happy homemaker" side of things, and wouldn't her base just eat that up? But instead we get this verbal diarrhea, the gist of which is "uh, I'm terrible at being a governor and my kids agree with me lol."

All this is like America's gift to me, and that gift is lolz and lots of them. THANK YOU AMERICA, I TRULY DID NOT APPRECIATE YOU UNTIL NOW.

One of the (many) things I love about "The Tholian Web" is that it proves that, while Vulcans can't lie, they can apparently troll when it's for the lolz GREAT JUSTICE. Maybe this exception only applies to Kirk?

Anyway, the point is that Spock and Bones are so in loooooove and this is proven because Spock called him Bones and then Bones was so overcome with ~emotion~ that he fainted in Spock's arms which totally qualifies as some sort of subtext. :DDDDDDDDDDDDDD

So despite the fact that I have Major Issues with how they dealt with Uhura in the movie, I do really like the idea that they're replacing the classic Kirk/Spock/McCoy manlove threesome thing with an OT4. I think [info]liviapenn talked about it and I think some other people have brought it up.

Thematically, I really love this idea for so many reasons* even though I still really do have some strong reservations about Uhura's role. Sure, she and Bones do both have similar supporting roles and are more crucial to the development of the Spock/Kirk dynamic than they are as characters unto themselves, but I think there's big difference between Uhura, a minority female character who gets promoted from glorified secretary to female love interest and crucial emotional support for one of the major characters, and McCoy, White American Hero who (sort of?) gets demoted to just being the curmudgeonly BFF. I guess I'm less butthurt about him becoming less important than I am about being told that Uhura becoming the Girlfriend means that all of Star Trek's issues with feminism are solved, and that everything is now perfectly equal among the four main characters. I guess if there had been more than one female speaking role who was still alive by the end of the movie I might feel differently.** :/

In related news, I spent, like, 25% of my birthday watching "Amok Time" with Nyssa and loling, so yeah. I'm pretty good. :D

*These reasons mostly are that I could totally see the OT4 backfiring and McCoy and Uhura becoming reluctant bffs who get into lolzy drunken arguments together AND THEN THEY RULE THE WORLD.

**I take this back, I'm just being too pessimistic here. GAILA LIVES.

I used to keep a list of movies that I wish had been featured on MST3K. I mean, I know there's this Rifftrax stuff now, which I like, for the most part, but they mostly tackle these modern films and it just isn't the same (and also no adorable robots, but that's my complaint with a lot of things). Most movies nowadays don't have the guts to give a guy a Liberace cape and a pimping gold belt buckle and call him a Pumaman like they used to. In a metaphorical sense, obviously.

So anyway, this list that I made is not nearly as exhaustive as it used to be because, uh, I forgot a lot of it, but in any case I have a new addition: the 1947 DeForest Kelley opus "Fear in the Night".

Holy shit did I love this movie. It showed that Bones McCoy, the guy who stared down Ricardo Montalban and told him to either stab him or choke him or get the fuck back in line, can convincingly play a total n00b of a virgin who can't drive, the ineffectual, dopey hero with a sweet heart and no brains who is a hallmark of so many MST'd movies. Seriously, he faints like three times in this movie for no real reason other than the vapors and it gets increasingly adorable every time he does it.

This would have been an awesome MST movie to do because it's bad in that 40's, low-budget noir kind of way but it's good enough where watching it doesn't crush parts of my soul like, say, "The Blood Waters of Dr. Z" did, which was so horrible that even the paunchy dude in the lowest quality latex fish suit imaginable couldn't save it.

Total aside, but am I just too lol sensitive for being disturbed on a really fundamental level by "Blood Waters of Dr. Z"? When Dr. Z kidnapped that woman to make her his fishbride and then accidentally killed her, and the camera zoomed in on her dead face, I nearly cried. Poor fishbride. ;_;

I hate when it's so late at night that I feel like despairing about something, but I'm so unimaginative that I can only think of really stupid things to despair about. Like right now I'm crying over the fact that recently I spontaneously became allergic to watermelon. It makes my throat swell up and my lips itch.

I really loved watermelon, you guys. There will never be another fruit for me. ;_;

So I've seen the new Star Trek about 4 times, which is ridiculous, I know, but various people kept asking me to go with them and I'm always like "Oh, no, I couldn't possib--OKAY YEAH LET'S WATCH IT A MILLION TIMES? :D :D :D" I'm am the saddest nerd, it's true.

But anyway, I've also been watching a bunch of the original series and the old movies for the first time in forever because generally I love everyone in TOS except Kirk and after watching the Planet of the Gangsters episode where he makes up a card game to troll people I'm even kind of waffling on that. Nyssa and I watched the planet of the whales movie last night and I learned a lot about...whales and stuff, and the follies of man, but mostly about how Bones McCoy is my favorite and he always will be. I want about a million fics like this:

SPOCK PRIME: You once carried my soul, you know. :|
NEW!MCCOY: D:

I would read this fic a million times.

The fun thing about this new username thing is that I'm still at the point where I'll see myself commenting and for a second I'll think, "Who is that handsome and talented young LJ user? OH WAIT THAT'S ME! :D"

Also, how endearing is Bob Dylan's epic mancrush on Johnny Cash?

Even wizened old man!Bob Dylan can't contain his admiration! And I love that part of the end where Cash looks like he's smoking a pipe and he cracks up and Dylan is just all "Holy shit I'm singing with Johnny Cash I can't even look up ohgodohgodohgod." I actually think that cover of "One Too Many Mornings" (or whatever it's called) is one of their better collaborations. I wish I had it on mp3.

The annoying voice on your flist you once knew as briana_rose07 is now [info]neigedens, so don't be confused!

:o Although I'm having some confusing feelings right now, I must say.

Anyway, fun getting-to-know-you meme for the ~*~new me~*~ from [info]ms_treesap!

a. People who have been tagged must write their answers on their blog and replace any question that they dislike with a new, original question.

b. Tag eight people. Don't refuse to do that. Don't tag who tagged you.

1. Where did your LJ handle come from?

It's from my favorite book Catch-22, from the scene where Yossarian gets belligerent and speaks French. ("Neigedens" being the French version of "Snowden.")

more meme funtimes! )

During the campaign, the Star Tribune had an article (on the front page, no less) explaining the reason that Sarah Palin had an accent that was more cartoonishly Minnesotan than any actual Minnesotan's accent I've ever heard. Besides the fact that she was probably putting on some of the "you betcha" shit for for delicious folksy effect, apparently the reason is that during the Depression, the WPA (or something like that; the Star Tribune just filed for bankruptcy, maybe that's why the search engine on their site isn't being helpful in finding this article) uprooted a bunch of Minnesotans and sent them to the valley where Wasilla is located.

I kind of want to go there, it must be like going into a time warp! Everyone sounds like their from the 30's and...still says "you betcha" a lot?

Actually, on second thought, I don't want to go there at all. D:

Unrelatedly, I can't stop giggling at this video. They look like they're plotting something adorable! I love when Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan team up to sing because even though they don't exactly pull it off that well, I don't even care. They obviously just wanted an excuse for teaming up!

I've started mainlining episodes of that 60's classic Man from U.N.C.L.E. It is another one of my pleasing (for the most part) romps into old-school slash fandom, and also (most importantly): it's got Illya! And Napoleon, who is good for some lolz, but mostly Illya! Illya gets taken down by the bad guys every episode in hilarious and heartbreaking ways and usually it's up to his bff Napoleon to save him!

What's my favorite Illya-gets-kidnapped moment? Is it the time Sharon Tate kissed him and then pushed him down a well? Is it the time the English aristocrat put him in his dungeon and then later threatened him with a poker? Is it the time Martin Landau put him in a cage full of vampire bats? Is it the time the hippies were attacking him and he decided that only way to save himself was by reciting defensive beatnik poetry?

You know, I can't even answer my own question, all the choices are just too fabulous. :DDDDDDD

I've been following Yuletide more closely than I ever have before, which means I can talk about how much I loved a lot of the Psych ones (especially The Curious Case of that Time with the Thing) plus the Penny Arcade rickroll one or some shit, I don't know.

My favorite one thus far is The Meeting: or How Gabe Came to Fight the Devil, which is too short but great anyway because it has Gabe being lovably earnest. I adore that shit, I really do.

I still haven't touched the Arrested Development ones, though, so I'll have to check that out as well.

Saw the new James Bond yesterday and was mostly impressed! They brought back Felix Lyter, which generally impressed me, maybe because while I was kind of meh about him in "Casino Royale," apparently I find him ten times hotter when he's all depressed and growly and drunk for the entire movie. WHO KNEW.

my hopes for fic with porn and terrorist groups have been DASHED )

So, Bond/Felix Lyter, y/n?

Absurdly early this morning, at the bus stop, my dad and I met John Kline, our Republican congressman who, surprise, surprise, we're both not voting for. I didn't realize it was him at first, not until he shook my hand, embarrassingly enough. He's just not dreamy-looking like Ashwin Madia was or distinguished-looking like Keith Ellison was, okay? (I've met both of them, obviously. It was pretty tight.)

Anyway, he looked a lot like this guy playing McCain in Les Misbarack. Do you think it was him?

You guys. You guys. YOU GUYS. I'M SO NERVOUS/EXCITED/PUMPED. THERE'S JUST ONE MOAR DAY AND I AM GOING TO VOTE THE SHIT OUT OF THIS MOTHERFUCKING CANDIDATE.
